Artist Biography

Doug started welding in 1981 at the age of seventeen, by twenty-one he achieved his journeyman status, 30 years of managing and working in the manufacturing and fabrication of various metals has given Doug the skills and abilities to conceive and create a variety of different artistic concepts.

Doug has always been interested in how steel could be manipulated and shaped; in 2006 he was introduced to blacksmithing by a friend. After purchasing a forge, anvil and some tools and lots of researching on the internet Doug was on his way “Artistic Blacksmithing “became the passion that consumed his free time. In 2010 Doug entered the Calgary Stampede Metal Art Show; it was the first time his work would be seen by the public. The piece titled Wetland Reflections placed 2nd in the artistic blacksmithing division.

In 2011 Doug entered two categories at the Calgary Stampede, Traditional and Artistic blacksmithing, the entries placing in several categories won Doug the title of Grand Champion and a gold and silver Calgary Stampede belt buckle.

In 2012 he entered the Stampede again (the centennial anniversary) and placed first once again winning a centennial, gold and silver Artistic Blacksmithing champion buckle.

The art of blacksmithing has endless possibilities and I feel that I am just beginning to tap my potential, the future looks bright and I am looking forward to see what it brings.
